More than 80 students and professors from the UPV have visited the facilities of the Institute of Telecommunications and Mobile Applications (iTEAM) to learn about the research activities being carried out in the new Immersive Communications Laboratory.
In these visits, the students have been able to participate in the demonstrations proposed by the laboratory staff, being participants in the creation of digital avatars in real time, remote communications thanks to Extended Reality (XR), the driving of a robot through an immersive cockpit, and the measurement of sensory response to visual, sound, and haptic impulses.
“The visit to the ITEAM laboratories has been a discovery for all the colleagues; we were excited by the projects that are being carried out. A world of possibilities for communications and increasingly immersive video game experiences,” stated Miguel Ángel, one of the students, during the visits to the laboratory.
The students who have attended the conferences come from three different degrees, Bachelor’s Degree in Digital and Multimedia Technology, University Master’s Degree in Social Media and Corporate Communication and University Master’s Degree in Technologies, Systems and Communication Networks, UPV degrees in which Professor and deputy director of research of iTEAM David Gómez-Barquero, responsible for the new space, teaches classes.
This initiative is designed to bring students closer to new technologies of an immersive nature, which little by little are being introduced into our lives to offer new communication possibilities in an increasingly digitalized world.
“Although the laboratory was mainly conceived to research the transmission of holographic communications and telepresence of the future, we also want to open it so that the students who wish so can carry out their internships, TFGs (Bachelor’s Thesis) and TFMs (Master’s Thesis) here,” David Gómez-Barquero expressed during the student visits.
The startup of this laboratory is part of the projects “Avanzando-5G-Inmersivo” and “Avanzando-5G-Gemelos Digitales” of the UNICO R&D 5G plan, funded by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service of Spain with NextGenEU funds from the European Commission.
